The Challenge

An inefficient legacy recovery solution holds MuseScore back

MuseScore continually evaluates their payments stack for opportunities to improve efficiency and drive revenue. In 2022, they sought to drive more revenue by optimizing payment recovery and reducing chargebacks. At the time, MuseScore was relying on a legacy payment recovery solution that lacked the sophistication and customization capabilities they desired.

After evaluating the market, MuseScore chose to partner with Butter because of the company’s machine-learning-based approach, automated optimization capabilities, and deep payment expertise. Unlike other solutions, Butter’s ML technology analyzes extensive transaction data to create individualized retry strategies, maximizing recovery effectiveness. Butter’s automated, data-driven models recover failed payments more quickly and efficiently, reducing retry attempts and boosting recovery rates without manual intervention.

Over the next two years, MuseScore saw a 33% relative lift in invoice recovery and increased their ARR by 6%. The music education platform also worked closely with Butter to seamlessly transition to a new Merchant ID (MID) and protect their revenue flow.

Butter takes a consultative approach to partnering with merchants, routinely analyzing data for improvement opportunities, and offering new payment strategies to drive more revenue. In 2024, Butter saw an opportunity for MuseScore to unlock more growth by reducing disputes.

That’s when they implemented Dispute by Butter. The turnkey solution automatically intercepts disputes to reduce fees, dispute counts, and manual tasks. It also reduces excessive processing fees, saving merchants even more money. 

With Dispute by Butter, MuseScore unlocked a 36% relative decrease in Visa disputes and freed internal resources to focus on growth opportunities instead of chargeback resolution.
